Event: Take part in Australia’s BIGGEST BOOK FAIR

Do you have books sitting in your bookcase that are no longer being read? Maybe, they’re just collecting dust?

If so, you could be using them to make a difference to children around Australia.

The ability to read is one of the most important gifts we can give a child. As well as helping to develop essential literacy skills, being able to read also provides children with:

•             A time for quiet and calmness in their busy lives

•             Creative stimulation

•             Springboards into wonderful discussions

•             Inspiration, thought and reflection

•             An appreciation for art and writing

•             Exposure to varied language use and a wide vocabulary

I know as members of My Little Bookcase’s community, you already value the importance of books and reading. When we’re stuck in our own book-loving bubble, I think it’s easy to forget that not all children have parents who are literate and have a passion for books and reading.

Thankfully, there is a fun way that you can make a difference to the lives of children who haven’t had a chance to be immersed in books, and thus, lack what we might consider essential literacy skills.

In 2012, The Australian Literacy and Numeracy Foundation is organising The Biggest Book Fair, and they’d love you to host an event. Money raised will be used to help disadvantaged children learn to read and write.

The Biggest Book Fair is being held on Thursday September 20 and anyone can host a fair (If September 20 doesn’t work for you, you can choose another day in September to host the event):

  • Individuals
  • Playgroups
  • Childcare centres
  • Kindergartens
  • Schools
  • Workplaces

Hosts are asked to collect a range of pre-loved and unused books from anyone and everyone they know (they do not have to be children’s books). Once a great range of books has been collected, hosts organise a book fair where the books can be sold.

Money raised will go to the Australian Literacy and Numeracy Foundation. The ALNF works with disadvantaged Australians- including those in refugee and Indigenous communities- helping them to develop essential literacy skills to ensure that they can participate confidently and productively in our society.
