Book Review: A Family of Readers by Roger Sutton and Martha V. Parravano

For over 80 years, The Horn Book has been a respected and informative resource for parents, teachers and librarians wanting to keep abreast of literature for young readers. The current editors of The Horn Book have produced this wonderful resource to help parents choose quality and engaging books for their children and young adults.

A Family of Readers is aimed at parents who already have a passion and respect for books, but feel like they need guidance in staying updated with current literature.

There are a number of book lists featured throughout this resource that cover a range of genres, including books for babies, folklore, chapter books, historical fiction, adventure books, non-fiction, poetry, and books for boys and for girls.

A Family of Readers is divided into four sequential parts. Each part addresses a different phase of a child’s reading development. These parts include:

  • Reading to Them (Information on finding books for babies)
  • Reading with Them (Information on helping children to become independent readers)
  • Reading on their Own (Information on the types of books independent readers enjoy reading)
  • Leaving them Alone (Information on the subject matters young adults are reading)

These sections provide appropriate book lists but also include some insightful and informative articles that help parents to evaluate various features of children’s literature. Although the book lists are American-based, these articles (written by a range of authors and literature experts) will help to provide parents with the tools and knowledge to select appropriate books for their children. Some of the chapters/articles include:

  • What Makes a Good Mother Goose?
  • How to Read the Pictures?
  • Delicious Rhythms, Enduring words
  • I Can Read a Whole Book
  • Cinderella without the Fairy Godmother
  • Where Snoop and Shakespeare Meet
