Who are Snugglepot & Cuddlepie?
Snugglepot and Cuddlepie are iconic characters that many Australians are familiar with. May Gibbs created the gumnut babies in the early 20th Century. They are tiny, human-like creatures that were born from eucalyptus blossoms. These characters are Australian bush creatures who live in the Australian bush. They embark on adventures and often meet native wildlife or other magical bushland creatures.
The stories are a great way to introduce Australian fauna and flora to those who have never been to Australia. The stories combine nature with fantasy and values like bravery, kindness and curiosity. These stories were originally written as short stories for older kids, but have been turned into beautiful illustrated picture books that are more accessible to toddlers and children in preschool.
These updated versions retain May Gibbs’ original illustrations, but offer simplified text. They are a great tool for early literacy. Snugglepot & Cuddlepie make excellent companions to explore language, storytelling and Australia’s unique beauty, whether you are reading them together or encouraging your child to read independently.
Gumnut Baby Hide-and-Seek: A Reading Activity
Where are Snugglepot & Cuddlepie? Inspired us to make storytime a creative experience. We decided to play hide-and-seek and make gumnut babies after reading the book. It was easy to set up and proved to be educational and entertaining.
What You Need:
-
Gumnuts, large and small
-
Pom poms
-
Glue
-
Googly Eyes

We added googly-eyed and glued pom-poms to the gum nuts. Then we let them dry. Each gumnut baby was given its own personality. Once they were ready, we used them as the stars in a hide-and-seek game both indoors and out. It not only reinforced the story, but also encouraged movement, problem-solving and imagination.
We played indoors on rainy days. We hid the gumnut babies in the house, and gave each other clues as to where they were. On sunny days, we played outside with a new twist – colour camouflage. The game was made more engaging and challenging by hiding the gumnut baby near objects with similar colours. This activity made the book come alive and helped my child connect with the characters.
