Easter is such a joyful celebration. It is a time to rejoice in the positive aspects of human nature. Finding books and stories to share with children at this time can be difficult though, especially if you’re looking for a story that is about more than eggs and egg hunts. Religiously, the story of Easter is not a pleasant one so it is understandable that authors steer clear of it as a children’s storyline. Easter is not only celebrated in a religious manner either. There are many Easter traditions and origins.

How we use Easter books at home

Australia is the only major Christian country where Easter happens in autumn rather than spring. That changes things. A few things our team does differently:

  • Lean into autumn imagery. Easter books from the Northern Hemisphere are full of spring — daffodils, fresh leaves, lambs. Some still work for Aussie kids; others feel weirdly off. We tag the autumn-friendly titles in our reviews so you can pick what fits your hemisphere.
  • Read a religious title and a secular title back-to-back. If your family observes Easter as a Christian festival, alternating The Story of Easter with a secular bunny-and-egg book gives kids the language for both halves of the cultural conversation. They’ll meet both at school regardless of what your home does.
  • Pair with one craft. Egg decorating, paper bunny ears, hot-cross-bun baking. The book is the warm-up, the craft is the artefact. We’ve done The Tale of Peter Rabbit + a salt-dough rabbit for years and it always works.
  • For families who don’t celebrate Easter: the bunny/egg/spring-renewal subset of these books works perfectly well as a long-weekend reading list without any religious framing. We’ve marked the religiously-explicit ones clearly.
  • Save one as the Sunday-morning book. Easter Sunday is a long, slow, chocolate-fuelled day in most homes. Tucking in with a book mid-morning is a lovely interruption to the sugar high.

Why this collection matters

Easter is one of those festivals that gets a lighter touch than Christmas in the picture-book canon — partly because the religious story is harder to tell to small children, and partly because the secular bunny-and-egg version doesn’t lend itself to long narratives. The good news is that the books that do exist tend to be very good. Each title on this list earned its place either because it tells the religious story respectfully, or because it celebrates the secular festival without feeling cheap.

The other quiet benefit: Easter is a natural moment to talk to children about renewal, change, and the seasonal year. The books on this list — even the gentle non-religious ones — make space for that. Kids who grow up with seasonal reading rituals tend to develop a richer sense of how time moves and how the year has shape.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need explicit religious books, or are bunny-and-egg books enough?
Depends on your family. If your child will encounter the religious story at school, kindy, or extended family gatherings, having one or two religious-Easter titles on the home shelf is helpful so they have age-appropriate framing. If your home is fully secular, the seasonal/bunny titles will absolutely cover the ground.

Best Easter book for under-3s?
Spot’s First Easter and Maisy’s Easter Egg Hunt are the safest bets — sturdy board-book editions, no plot complexity, fits a 90-second attention span.

Are these mostly Northern Hemisphere?
About two-thirds. Aussie Easter books are a small but growing category. We’ve weighted Australian titles where we can — An Aussie Easter Hat Parade and similar — because the cultural references rhyme with what your kid actually does at school.

What about chocolate-free Easter books?
Most of the religious-Easter titles avoid chocolate entirely. The Easter Story, Easter by Jan Pienkowski, and similar nativity-style retellings are essentially chocolate-free zones. Useful if you’re trying to balance the sugar narrative.
