Most kids get excited about the thought of cooking in the kitchen: making a mess, creating concoctions, mixing, blending and rolling. But, most of all I think they love cooking for their families.
I know I did. I have fond memories of my first cookbook, ‘The Little Monster Cookbook’ by Jan and Michael Salmon (Lamont Books). As a child, I loved the monster illustrations that accompanied the simple recipes. I still have the cookbook; I flip through it now and realise that I never really cooked many of the dishes, but I certainly pored over the pages for years. There were some recipes that I made on a regular basis: Cinnamon Toast (Mum can vouch for receiving this as her Mother’s Day breakfast year after year) and Monster Spider Drink. I can’t wait to pass this book onto my daughter.

There are many wonderful cookbooks that provide snippets of history and origin. Stew a Cockatoo is an Aussie cookbook for children. It may present itself a little ocker but it hits the right note with children. It is funny, entertaining and a little bit silly. It is full of interesting history and tidbits, and I believe Australian kids should know why or how our foods were invented like Anzac biscuits, lamingtons, Pavlova and bush tucker. There are also a few recipes that pay homage to the wonderful international dishes that have been introduced to our cuisine.

It is a great way to step back in time; to imagine the memories of others, and wonder how life might have been different in another time. Would you believe there is a nostalgic cookbook for children?
Look and Cook is an ingenious concept. Along with classic recipes, it includes basic cooking skills such as how to cook vegetables, pasta, and rice and how to boil an egg. I particularly love the illustrations that demonstrate how to tell if an egg is fresh and how to set the table. It is vintage in style. The illustrations have been taken from classic cookbooks dating from the 1900s to the 1960s. The author shares her own food memories and dedicates a section of the book to the reader in the form of blank lined pages to fill in with your own favourite recipes. How to actually cook from a kid’s cookbook
Lila’s daughter has cooked her way through three of the books on this list. So this advice is hard-won. The key thing nobody tells you about kid cookbooks is that the book is half the dish — how you read it changes whether the cooking happens at all.
- Read the recipe the day before. Don’t open the book at 4pm and try to cook from cold. The night before, sit on the couch, read the recipe like it’s a story, talk about which steps look fun. Day-before reading is the prep.
- Lay everything out before you start (mise en place, kid version). Bowls, ingredients, measuring spoons, a damp cloth. Most kid-cooking disasters happen in the “wait, where’s the —” gap. A laid-out kitchen turns chaos into theatre.
- Pick recipes that look messy on the page. Counter-intuitively: kids stick with messy-looking recipes longer. A child who can see flour-everywhere on page 12 of Annabel Karmel’s Family Cookbook won’t panic when their actual kitchen looks the same.
- Take the photo. Most of these cookbooks lend themselves to a phone-photo of the finished dish. Send it to grandma. The dish becomes a story they tell, not just a thing they ate.
- Cook the same recipe three times across a year. Rotation builds confidence faster than novelty. A six-year-old who’s made the same pancake recipe ten times genuinely owns it.
Why this collection matters
Cooking is one of the few household practices where children are still treated as people who can actually do something useful. Most modern parenting moves the opposite direction — safer surfaces, helmets, supervised everything. A cookbook in a child’s hands says “you’re going to make something real, and people will eat it.” That’s a different message from almost any other book they’ll meet.
The titles on this list have been chosen because they trust the child. They have actual recipes a kid can pull off — not patronising play-cookery. The end product can be served at dinner. Mia points out that this matters in the classroom too: kids who’ve cooked at home arrive at school maths with a relationship to fractions that no worksheet can replicate.

What age can a child realistically cook from a cookbook?
Solo from about age 7 with simple recipes. With supervision from age 4 (stirring, pouring, decorating). Babies and toddlers can “help” by pressing dough or sprinkling toppings — we’d count that as cooking.
Best beginner book for a 5-year-old?
Annabel Karmel is the safe bet — the photography is clear, the steps are short, the dishes are achievable. Dinosaur Cookbook if your child is dinosaur-obsessed.

Yes. Pretending a salty cake is delicious teaches a child nothing. Eating one bite, saying “the salt got us this time, let’s try again next week” teaches them everything.
