Below are 31 titles in total — we’ve highlighted our 6 favourites above. Each one links straight through to Amazon AU.
Grandparents play such an important role in the lives of children, even more so today. Queensland, New South Wales, and Western Australia have all officially recognized this by declaring the last Sunday of October Grandparents’ Day (QLD celebrates Grandparents’ Day on the first Sunday in November). I’m sure it won’t take long for the other states to follow.
I thought it would be a lovely gesture for children to share a special book with their grandparents on this day. Below is a list of my favorite grandmother-themed books that you’ll hopefully be able to find at your local bookstore or library.

Little Ava Stories truly is a collection of LITTLE stories. The little stories are made up of just a few sentences each. Dedicated to her granddaughter, Elsie has written about the small moments that a grandmother finds warm and amusing.
She has used linocut illustrations in natural, earthy colors to convey her stories of playing with leaves in autumn, feeding birds in spring, and visiting the beach on a sky-blue day.
Little Ava Stories is minimalistic but it is a lovely, sentimental, little book.

How to read these with the grandparent in mind
Lila’s daughter has grandparents in three different states and one in New Zealand. So this list isn’t hypothetical for our team — we’ve tested every reading mode below.
- The video-call read-along. The single best thing we’ve ever done with these books. Buy two copies (or a kid’s copy and a Kindle copy for grandma), prop the phone up, both turn the pages together. Twenty minutes once a week. The grandparent reads, the child points, you do nothing. We started this with Cooking with Grandma and it became the weekly ritual.
- The gift-with-a-photo trick. Print a recent photo of grandma and the child together, slide it inside the front cover, write a one-line message. Books like I Love My Grandma, Spot Loves His Grandma, and To My Granny: Doodles for You are designed for this and it’s impossible to overdo.
- Use Grandparents Day as the anchor. NSW, QLD and WA all officially recognise Grandparents’ Day in late October / early November. Pick one of these books each year and make “reading the new grandma book together” the day’s ritual — either in person or over a call. Do this five years in a row and you’ve built a tradition.
- For kids whose grandma has passed. Don’t avoid this list. Grandma’s Gloves, Ladder to the Moon and Grandma’s Place are tender, age-appropriate ways to talk about a grandmother who isn’t here any more. We’d read them with a grown-up close by and a pile of photos to look at afterwards.
- Watch the grandma vocabulary. Across this list grandmothers are called Grandma, Gran, Granny, Nana, Nanna, Gramma, Gags, Gooligulch, and more. That’s a feature, not a bug — whatever your family calls grandma, you’ll find a book that uses that word. Hand a child the book that names their grandma the way they actually call her and watch their face.
Why this collection matters
Joel pointed out something we hadn’t fully clocked: a third of Australian children today live more than a four-hour drive from at least one grandparent. For a lot of kids, grandma is a face on a screen, a voice on the phone, and a presence at Christmas — not a daily neighbour. Picture books like the ones above quietly do the work of making that relationship feel solid even when geography won’t cooperate.
The other thing this list does well, almost by accident, is show grandmothers as varied. Grandma Joins the All Blacks has a grandma playing rugby. My Gran the Gorilla has a grandma being literally a gorilla. The Day Grandma Came to Stay (and Spoilt My Life) isn’t a saint — she’s a real, slightly annoying houseguest. Kids deserve grandmother stories where grandma isn’t just a dispenser of biscuits.
Frequently asked questions
What about books about grandfathers?
We have a separate list. See our Special Children’s Books About Grandfathers shortlist — same approach, 29 titles, equally heart-strings-y.
Best book to give as the official Grandparents Day gift?
For a grandma who’s present and active in the child’s life, our team consensus is Cooking with Grandma or Dancing with Grandma by Rosemary Mastnak — both lovely, both let the grandma be the hero. For a more poetic gift, Ladder to the Moon by Maya Soetoro-Ng is gorgeous.
Can a grandma read these to the child rather than the parent?
That’s the dream. Many of them — I Love Grandma, I’m Glad You’re My Gran, Things I Love About Grandparents — are essentially scripted love letters that work better when read aloud by the grandma to the child. Slip the book to grandma a week before you visit so she can practise.
What about kids whose grandparents are not biological — foster, adoptive, step?
The Big Book of Families at the bottom of the list deliberately frames family broadly. We also like The Ultimate Guide to Grandmas & Grandpas! as a celebration that doesn’t lock down the relationship to a specific structure.
