Below are 29 titles in total — we’ve highlighted our 6 favourites above. Each one links straight through to Amazon AU.
Grandpa, Gramps, Pop, Grandad, Pa; whatever your children call their grandfather, there are many extraordinary children’s books that celebrate a grandfather’s relationship with his grandchildren.
To help you celebrate Grandparents’ Day in Australia (Last weekend of October), I’ve put together this special list of children’s books about grandfathers. I thought it would be a lovely gesture for children to share a special book with their grandparents on this day. Hopefully, you’ll be able to find one at your local bookstore or library.

My one disappointment is that most of these books portray a grandfather’s relationship with their grandson (rather than granddaughter). Nevertheless, the books featured in this list are nothing short of beautiful and touching. My favourite books in this list are those that have a parallel storyline alongside the obvious grandfather one- stories that delve deeper into what the grandfather is like as a person. Feel free to add your favourite grandfather-themed book to the list.

This is a book that warms your heart from beginning to end. The Magnificent Tree is not only a celebration of the relationship between a child and a grandparent but also a lesson in nurturing small ideas. Bonny enjoys spending time with her pop. They are both very different and that’s precisely what they admire about each other. But, they are both ‘ideas people’. Bonny’s ideas are simple but clever, while Pop’s ideas are big, brave and brilliant. Read our full review of The Magnificent Tree here.

How to read these with grandad
This list is the companion to our grandmothers shortlist, and most of the same advice applies — the video-call read-along, the gift-with-a-photo, the Grandparents Day ritual. A few things specific to grandads:
- Grandad-read-aloud is a different reading mode. Granddads tend to read more slowly, with bigger character voices, and are happier to be interrupted. Make the most of it. Grandma might read more polished; grandad will read more memorable.
- Pair the book with the grandad activity. If your grandad fishes, follows football, gardens, builds, or fixes things, find a book on this list that touches that world — My Grandpa, Grandpa Green, The Tin Forest — and read it together while doing the thing.
- For grandads who’ve served: My Grandad Marches on Anzac Day is a tender bridge between his memory and your child’s curiosity. We have a longer ANZAC Day shortlist if that’s the door you want to open.
- For grandads who’ve passed: Grandpa Green by Lane Smith and Grandad’s Island by Benji Davies are gentle, age-appropriate ways to keep his memory present without turning every reading into a grief moment.
- Don’t under-estimate the grandad-as-clown books. My Grandpa Is a Champion, Grandpa’s Garden, the silly ones — they let kids see grandad as fun rather than fragile. That matters at every age.
Why this collection matters
Picture-book grandfathers used to be a fairly narrow archetype: bald, kind, slightly bumbling, dispenses lollies. The modern crop of grandfather books on this list does much better. The grandads here garden, sail, paint, fight, run, mourn, repair. They’re individuals, not stock characters.
That matters because a child’s real grandfather is also an individual — with hobbies, history, opinions and quirks — and a kid who’s read books that respect granddad’s individuality is more likely to be curious about their own granddad. That curiosity, in turn, is one of the great gifts a child can give an older man. Most grandads, in our experience, would rather be asked about their life than be sent another novelty mug.
Frequently asked questions
How is this list different from the grandmothers list?
The grandmothers list leans more domestic (cooking, dancing, hugs); the grandfathers list leans more activity-based (fishing, fixing, walking, remembering). Neither is a hard rule. Several books appear on both shortlists because grandparents come in pairs.
Best Father’s Day-adjacent gift for grandad?
Two stand-outs: My Grandpa by Marta Altes (warm, witty, underrated) and Grandad’s Island by Benji Davies if your grandad is far away or no longer around — the second one is particularly good if you want something tender that doesn’t feel mawkish.
For step-grandads, bonus grandads, granddad-figures?
The same broad rule as our other family lists applies. The Big Book of Families from our other shortlists is the one to keep on the shelf to make the broader point. For specific titles tailored to your family’s shape, drop us a note via the contact page.
Are any of these by Indigenous Australian authors?
A few touch on Indigenous family structures (where grandfather and elder are intertwined), and we’ve included Magabala-published titles where they fit. We’re building a longer First-Nations grandparent shortlist as a separate post.
