Book Review: Chase through Venice by Sally Gould and Laura Peterson

This picture book will evoke beautiful memories for anyone who has visited Venice. It showcases the beautiful landmarks of Venice and Sally Gould appropriately weaves some common Italian vocabulary into the story.

The divine visuals begin with the subtle and muted Venetian maps that appear on the endpapers.

Laura Peterson’s illustrations are rich and full of depth. They may appear more vibrant and colourful than the real Venice (there is no rain to be seen in this picture book) but, nevertheless, they are incredible luscious and romantic.

The story follows Marco, a young boy, who would like to become a gondolier like his father. He charms a group of tourists who leave their camera behind. Marco embarks on a chase through Venice to find them.

Chase through Venice really is a lovely introduction to Venice for children, and after reading this delightful book they will surely be seduced by the unique and romantic city.
