Even though our bookcase is already jam-packed with wonderful alphabet books, I was really pleased to stumble upon I Love My ABC by Anna Walker. Ollie returns to us amongst some other exquisite illustrations in this simple alphabet book. Apart from the book being an absolute beauty to the eyes, it has everything I look for in a first alphabet book:
- A board book format making it durable for little hands
- Simple (but charming) illustrations upon white pages
- Lower and uppercase letters
- A simple image to represent each letter of the alphabet. This gives the reader freedom to use the book in a myriad of ways (E.g. Guess the word; Tell a story using the images etc.).
A Simple Alphabet Game:
My daughter is showing a keen interest in the alphabet at the moment. She doesn’t recognise all of her letters yet, but she does spot them in the environment around her and is always asking questions about what she sees.
Taking her lead I thought we’d play an alphabet game outdoors. I Love My ABC came in handy for the game too.
What you need:
- An alphabet book (we used I Love My ABC by Anna Walker)
- Large Foam Letters (or you could create your own letters using heavy card stock)
The activity:
- I placed the letters around our backyard. Some were hidden and some were in the open.
- We sat with I Love My ABC, and opened the book to a random page. We briefly talked about the letter on the page and made up a story about the illustration.
- We then searched the backyard to find the corresponding letter.
- We took it in turns to open the book to a page and hunt for each of the letters.
Easy to set up, easy to play, lots of fun and a little bit of learning!!!

Ollie makes an appearance in this book which is equally as delightful as I Love My ABC. Ollie takes an adventure in the garden where he loves to count. He puts on his two red gumboots and counts the chickens, caterpillars, frogs, ladybugs, ducks, beetles, butterflies and sunflowers.

Great idea, alphabet hunt. Where did you get the letters from. I may try objects with respective letters. Oh, serious cubby house envy!
Yes, introducing objects would be a great way to extend the activity. :)
This is such a great idea! What child doesn’t love to hunt/search and just seeing all those letters around the yard would be so magical and fun!
Yes, and the more difficult the letter is to get to, the more fun and adventure can be had! :)
What a great activity and it looks lots of fun! Can I also say, that is one amazing cubby!!!
Thanks. It was fun, especially once I joined in. The cubby house is pretty amazing. Hubby is a talented carpenter. He helped Santa build it for Christmas. :)
That’s so good. I might suggest it for library storytime! I can imagine the chaos ;)
But how wonderful can chaos be at times?????
Oh we just received that book from Scholastic, and I got the foam letters too. Think I might set up a hunt inside the house (we’ve got an almost non-existent backyard :( unfortunately). Thank-you for the wonderful idea.
This looks like fun, can’t wait to try it! I have been a bit out of action lately on online( on purpose!),so its so nice to come online and visit my favourite blogs and bonus get some lovely ideas and inspiration!
It can be good for the soul to log off sometimes. Thanks for popping back here.
Dear Jackie,
