You can play this game in many different ways, depending on the child’s ability or age.
By using a magnifying lens, ask your child if they can find the following words:
- Choose the letters you want to focus on: You or your child can choose these. You can choose letters that your child is already familiar with or those they are only beginning to recognize.
- Sounds: Children may want to search for letters (digraphs or trigraphs) which make a certain sound. (For instance, kites, cats, ducks, Christmas).
- Words of interest: You could, for example, ask your child to choose words from their sight words, vocabulary lists, or words of interest.

Who knows what they will explore – letters, words, illustrations or ??????????????
Selecting books
It’s not necessary to spend a lot of time choosing the books you want to use. If you’re looking to be more selective, look for:
- Alliteration in books: Your child will have many opportunities to learn and recognise letters.
- Books with high frequency words
